These 'Watergrams' are exposures of light passing through wave patterns and captured on photosensitive paper. The water acts as a liquid lens, focusing and scattering light at varying intervals depending on the frequency of sounds in the water. The examples shown in this video document frequencies between 20-60hz. 20hz creates large wave patterns while 60hz creates tight networks of smaller wavelets.

The exposure time and angle of light also plays a substantial role in the final print. All the examples in this video use an exposure time of 250μs or 1/4000th of a second. This near-instantaneous flash is necessary for capturing an exact moment in the water's oscillation. Steep angles of light help to flatten the wave shadows on the page while oblique angles cast long shadows from the top of each wave crest.
