Frequency Studies

Expanding on an early investigation into the phenomena of vibration in water (cymatics), Turczan’s recent works extend his inquiry into the potential for light and color to achieve resonant states.  Frequency Studies is an expanded view of this body of work, moving beyond water to find resonance directly in light and pigmented color.

Turczan's art practice explores the moment when various mediums attain states of harmony, highlighting how resonant phenomena affect our perception. The kinetic sculpture titled Tidal Resonance is a 5’ diameter stainless steel vessel filled with water that Turczan choreographs using dynamic oscillating tones.  The body of water contained within is transformed into a network of waves reminiscent of deep ocean currents.  Simultaneously, the watercolor paintings Twenty-Two Twilights created specifically for Kodō present subtle transitions of color frequency found at dawn and dusk, prompting viewers to reassess their own visual processes in the face of chromatic ambiguity. Placed outside against the changing sky is Annular Optic, a parabolic ring that demonstrates Turczan’s first exploration of optical resonance.  Depending on the frequency of reflected light and position of the viewer, the sculpture’s colors vary drastically from smooth gradients to vibrant bands of iridescence.

Frequency Studies  is an investigation into the possibility of materials attaining new states when activated by oscillating forces. It is simultaneously a scientific and aesthetic inquiry into how frequency can reshape states of consciousness and perception, inviting viewers to experience the malleability of their own perceptions.
