Veil II, 2024
Mojave Desert, California, USA
light, water, steam

California’s Mojave Desert is home to several incredible natural hot springs. Steam rises from these springs in the early morning as the cold air meets the hot thermal pools. I installed a light sculpture an hour before dawn here and documented this work as the sun began to rise. As the steam drifts through the beams of light, it creates brilliant magenta and blue clouds depending on the angle of light. Similar to how a rainbow is generated, or how noctilucent clouds form in high-altitudes, these sculptures recreate atmospheric phenomena at an intimate scale. I am excited to provide opportunities for others to experience these otherwise elusive phenomena first-hand.
